A number of FIRE AID member organisations including Blythswood Care, UK Rescue Organisation, Operation Florian, and EASST have delivered considerable fire and rescue aid and road safety initiatives to the Republic of Moldova – significantly increasing its capacity to both respond to and prevent emergencies.

A particular focus has been to improve the emergency response to road traffic collisions in Moldova – a country with the third highest road fatality rate in Europe. As well as the loss of human life, it also brings a high socio-economic cost at around 3% of the Moldovan GDP. Factors contributing to this unacceptably high figure include the length of time for rescue assistance to reach incidents, a lack of necessary equipment to respond effectively, and gaps in knowledge of those responding to incidents particularly regarding extrication.
