On 8th May 2016, 4 personnel from Operation Florian – Jo Musgrave, Gaz Costello, Danny Gall and Paul Leonard – began their two day journey from the UK to Cape Verde to continue delivering support to the fire service in Maio.
Maio is one of the smallest islands in Cape Verde with a population of around 8,000 inhabitants, mostly farmers and fishermen. Jo had previously travelled to Maio in 2014 to deliver first aid training and medical supplies to villagers and during that trip discovered that volunteer firefighters were in need of equipment and training.
To help address this, the 2016 project team donated a fire appliance and delivered a 2 week training programme to 30 volunteer firefighters, focused on BA and pumps and ladders.
Following a challening but successful training period, the trained volunteer firefighters demonstrated their new skills and equipment to the public in a successful event.
The project team held meetings with Chief Elvio to discuss recommendations for the future and how Operation Florian can continue to support Cape Verde.
