EMPOWERING GHANA’S FIREFIGHTERS FOR WILDFIRE RESPONSE
On 14th November 2024, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Headquarters in Accra hosted a landmark event that highlighted innovation, collaboration, and progress in combating wildfires. With over 350 participants, including distinguished Ghanaian and UK representatives, the event underscored a shared commitment to enhancing emergency response capabilities.

The event garnered widespread national media attention, with the donated wildfire response vehicle taking centre stage. This occasion also marked the launch of the GNFS Wildfire Prevention Campaign, aligning perfectly with the vehicle’s deployment.
A LANDMARK PARTNERSHIP IN WILDFIRE RESPONSE
In an unprecedented partnership, FIRE AID and Dubai Civil Defence have joined forces to provide wildfire-specific vehicles to fire services across Africa, empowering local fire services to respond more effectively to wildfires while reducing emissions from fire incidents. This landmark initiative reflects Dubai Civil Defence’scommitment to fostering international collaboration in fire service innovations, following its leadership role in global discussions at COP28.
The project represents a dynamic fusion of aid and trade, collaboration and innovation, and embodies a shared commitment to sustainable, ethical support for communities with critical fire and rescue needs. FIRE AID, an alliance of organizations dedicated to delivering sustainable fire and rescue aid, is working closely with Emergency Aid International and the United Kingdom Rescue Organisation to provide essential equipment and training to the Ghana National Fire Service.
This collaboration marks the arrival of the first wildfire-specific vehicles in Ghana, which will significantly enhance the GNFS's wildfire response capabilities, reduce emissions, and protect lives and property.

The vehicles, manufactured by UK-based Angloco Limited, are tailored for wildfire response and will empower firefighters from Techiman, Bono East Region to respond to fires more effectively.

TRAINING TO BUILD LOCAL EXPERTISE
Lt. Officer Storms Menri led a hands-on training session for five firefighters from the Bono East Region. These individuals are now equipped to operate the specialized vehicle and will act as trainers for their peers upon its deployment to Techiman, Bono East Region.
This initiative reflects GNFS's and DCD’s shared commitment to building local capacity, ensuring the vehicle’s effective utilization, and enhancing the region's resilience against wildfires.

“Thank you very much. We will make sure the vehicle is well looked after and utilised to its full capacity. We experience serious bushfire incidents and are often overwhelmed. Our stations are quite distant from each other, and with heavy traffic and poor roads, fires are often out of control by the time we arrive. This vehicle, built for rough terrain, will greatly improve our response times.”
Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Operations:
“This is a multipurpose vehicle that can also be used for road traffic incidents. The Toyota concept is brilliant and suits our terrain perfectly.”
TACKLING WILDFIRES IN GHANA’S BONO EAST REGION
Ghana is facing an increasing number of wildfires, particularly in the Bono East Region, which is now classified as a high-risk area. Contributing factors include prolonged dry seasons, human activities such as farming and charcoal production, and climate change, which exacerbates drought conditions. These wildfires have severe environmental and economic impacts, threatening agricultural productivity, wildlife habitats, and community health.
The arrival of the wildfire-specific vehicles will greatly enhance the Techiman fire service’s ability to respond more effectively to wildfires. By enabling faster response times, these advanced vehicles will help reduce the devastating effects of deforestation and protect vital vegetation. This initiative contributes to broader goals of preventing and mitigating global warming by preserving critical natural resources in the region.
