LIFE-SAVING AID CONVOY ARRIVES IN THE GAMBIA
With a population of just under 2.5 million, The Gambia is a small but growing nation, heavily reliant on tourism and a few key exports. However, it faces significant challenges in its emergency services, which are severely under-resourced.
In 2019, the Gambia Fire & Rescue Service (GFRS) operated with just six fire stations and corresponding fire engines for the entire country. This number doubled in 2022 when FIRE AID partner, The Emergency Services Aid Charity (ESAC), delivered six additional fire engines. These new resources enabled the establishment of fire stations in more remote villages and towns, extending coverage beyond the capital, Banjul.
The convoy in September 2022, delivered a total of 18 vehicles, including a combination of fire engines and ambulances. Two years later, in September 2024, ESAC embarked on another mission, bringing 20 additional emergency vehicles. These were laden with personal protective equipment (PPE), boats, water rescue equipment, and other essential supplies. Of the 20 vehicles, seven were fire engines.
The journey to deliver these resources was not without its challenges. Volunteers faced extreme climates and adverse weather conditions as they drove 4,000 miles through the Sahara Desert to The Gambia. Despite these hardships, the team maintained their dedication and enthusiasm, ultimately delivering not only the vehicles but also crucial training on the donated equipment. During their visit, they met with various government officials, including the Minister of the Interior, to discuss the future of emergency services in the country.
The impact of these efforts was immediate. The vehicles were put into service within days of their arrival, with one fire engine responding to its first incident just hours after being stationed. Since ESAC’s involvement, nearly all Gambian firefighters have been equipped with modern PPE, and the country’s emergency services fleet size has effectively doubled.
These contributions have significantly enhanced the GFRS’s ability to respond to emergencies, providing hope and security to communities across The Gambia. With continued support and collaboration, the vision of a more robust and reliable emergency service infrastructure for the nation is steadily becoming a reality.
